Borealis

Our Vision Statement

Borealis is an easy to use, accessible platform for managing student records and registration.

The project aims to improve the features and structure of the current tool used by the Registrar’s Office. The project will allow users to see records, personal information, grades, and manage courses. It will be a tool that effectively addresses the needs of both staff and students in the efficient management of student information.

The project is designed to give students a smooth experience managing their courses and information. This means they can add new courses, drop current courses, and waitlist for courses that are full. Students will have access to helpful organizational features available to them, such as sorting courses by term, which facilitates structured course planning. The project will also allow students to view their information, update it as needed, and request documents such as transcripts, streamlining the administrative processes and reducing paperwork.

As Borealis’s main focus is registration, it aims to increase the speed and ease of use of the process. We will reduce the amount of clicks required to reach features, making task completion more efficient . The system will also provide features such as a “shopping cart” that allow for an easier process to register for courses, as the current system lacks course registration assistance.

Our system offers a comprehensive platform for staff, including advisors, and faculty members, such as professors. Tailored to meet the needs of advisors, the platform allows them to effortlessly view students' information, override prerequisites, and manage requirements, streamlining their advising processes. For faculty members, Borealis provides the capability to track enrolled students in their courses and assign grades, contributing to a more efficient and organized teaching experience. Moreover, department heads among faculty members can add new courses or remove existing course offerings, leading to improved academic program management.

A large focus will be taken on being user-friendly, to ensure that a user with any level of technological proficiency can easily navigate through the features. The system will be not only efficient but easily understandable.

Borealis will be considered successful if course registration is considered to be quicker and easier than the current system in place, which will be determined by surveying users of both programs. It will also be considered successful if the amount of users grows to match or matches the amount of students enrolled in the university.
